The number of people killed in car accidents in the regions covered by the Sûreté du Québec rose in 2020. In total, 228 people were killed in collisions and accidents last year, as compared with 217 in 2019. Last year’s toll was below the five-year average of 236 fatalities.
The main cause of accidents were:
- Reckless driving and speeding: 29 per cent
- Lack of attention or distracted driving: 14 per cent
- Impaired driving caused by alcohol, drugs or fatigue: 10 per cent
Nearly 20 per cent of those who perished in car accidents were not wearing a seatbelt.
In 2020, there were 52 motorcycle accidents that resulted in 54 deaths, a rise in the five-year average of 14 deaths annually.
As well in 2020, traffic accidents took the lives of 18 pedestrians (an improvement over 2019, when 21 pedestrians were killed) and six cyclists, surpassing the five-year average of four a year.
