The lawsuit alleges that Redgate expressed “romantic” feelings to H.N. and there was a “dominant, continuous” sexualized tone to Redgate’s communications with H.N., proposing a sexual relationship and confessing he felt “shameful” about the feelings. Redgate proposed numerous activities to “take the pressure off,” adds the lawsuit filed in B.C. Supreme Court.
“The activities constitute intentional infliction of mental suffering, sexual assault and battery,” says the suit.
Included in the alleged activities were psychological “grooming” behaviours, continuous talk about sex and H.N.’s body, groping and touching of the plaintiff’s buttocks, instructing him to lie on top of him for extended periods of time and exposing his erect penis to H.N.
H.N. claims that he suffered a number of injuries including “moral” injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, depressive symptoms and anxiety. He is seeking damages, including for pain and suffering, and loss of past earning and future earning capacity. He also wants special, aggravated and punitive damages.
“From things that Redgate told me about his ‘friendships’ with other young boys, and from his sexual interest in children and ready access to them from a teaching career that spanned decades, I believe I was not the only one,” H.N. said in a statement released by his lawyer, Sandra L. Kovacs. “This belief is what motivates me to take this action — to find out what the school district knew about this man, what failure of their checks and balances brought him to me and if there are others that experienced similar abuse from him.”
