RailTel, which has offered fibre optic connectivity at over 5,900 stations throughout the nation and largely in rural areas, is now planning to offer broadband and WiFi services in distant villages, sources mentioned on Friday.
“As we already have optic fibre cables in 58,742 route km and proper Internet WiFi services at 5,900 railway stations we have shared a proposal with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for providing broadband and WiFi services in remote villages,” a RailTel supply related to the event informed IANS.
The supply mentioned that RailTel, which has a presence even within the distant areas of the nation, has the capability to offer broadband and WiFi companies within the villages, which can be a mega increase for the federal government’s Digital India programme.
The supply mentioned that DoT has to date not responded to the proposal despatched by it.
The supply mentioned that when permission is granted by the DoT, then the work for offering the broadband and WiFi companies will begin taking form.
The supply mentioned that RailTel plans to offer broadband service with a primary telephone and WiFI companies. It clarified that it has no plans to enter into the voice calling companies.
The supply mentioned that RailTel has the infrastructure and tools in place at 5,900 stations throughout the nation and so they simply want to increase their companies to the villages, whereas it might take time for the personal operators.
The supply mentioned that contemplating the truth that many operators companies are usually not out there in lots of distant areas so laying the cables and establishing cell towers will take time for them.
“And our services are already available at the nearest railway stations there, so we just need to extend the services to the villages,” the supply added.
RailTel, a Miniratna public sector unit beneath the Ministry of Railways, handles essential communication programs, video conferencing and implementation of e-office platform in addition to storing vital information for the nationwide transporter in its two information centres in Haryana’s Gurugram and Telangana’s Secunderabad.
