The health and social services agency for the Laurentians says it’s looking into a report a hospital in St-Eustache sent an elderly indigenous man home to Kanesatake wearing only a hospital gown in early January.
Myriam Sabourin, a spokesperson for the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux des Laurentides, said on Saturday the agency contacted the wife of the patient whom CTV News reported on Friday had been discharged on Jan. 6 wearing the thin hospital-issued gown after spending a week there with heart issues.
The man, who is in a wheelchair after suffering three strokes several years ago, had with him two bags containing his clothes. The man’s spouse also said his $1,600 hearing aid is missing.
“Generally speaking, no user who is discharged leaves in a gown, unless a special situation requires it,” Sabourin said in an email on Saturday. “If the person is incapacitated, contact is made with a family member or a community organization to ensure that the departure goes smoothly.”
