MOSCOW — Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was arrested upon arrival at a Moscow airport on Sunday, five months after being poisoned by a military-grade nerve agent.
Navalny had flown in from Berlin, where he had undergone treatment for exposure to the nerve agent Novichok. The anti-corruption crusader and European countries have blamed Russian authorities for the poisoning, which Moscow rejects.
Navalny was detained not long after his plane made a surprise detour from the airport where it was originally scheduled to land and where hundreds of his supporters had gathered to greet him, braving temperatures of -20 degrees Celsius. Around 60 supporters were arrested there.
Before being taken away by police at passport control, Navalny had told journalists he did not regret coming back to Russia, despite the known threat of arrest.
“I am completely happy,” he said. “This is the best day in five months.”
