Arsenal train ahead of Newcastle meeting
Arsenal welcome Newcastle to north London this evening as the teams square off in the Premier League less than a week-and-a-half since they met in the FA Cup third round.
Newcastle manager Steve Bruce was asked about the mood in his squad after Newcastle lost to bottom-placed Sheffield United last week. He said:

The return of Jamaal Lascelles is a boost to Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United who have been dealing with outbreaks of coronavirus in their squad for over a month:

Arsenal have won 14 of the last 15 Premier League meetings, losing the other 2-1 away in April 2018.
Newcastle have lost eight successive league games away to the Gunners since a 1-0 victory in November 2010.
This match comes just nine days after Arsenal beat Newcastle 2-0 at home in the FA Cup third round.

Team news – Changes
Mikel Arteta makes three changes to the Arsenal team that drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace last time out. Thomas Partey starts for the Gunners with Kieran Tierney and Cedric Soares back in the defensive line. Hector Bellerin, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Dani Ceballos are the men to make way.
Steve Bruce on the other hand makes some wholesale changes. Of the XI to start in the 1-0 defeat against Sheffield United last Tuesday only three players remain in the Newcastle starting XI. Those being Callum Wilson, Ciaran Clark and Karl Darlow.
It’s a welcome return for Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis and Jonjo Shelvey who all passed fit to play.

Recent results
Arsenal have had a turnaround in form that has seen them lose one league game out of their last six. It’s moved them up to 11th in the table and victory tonight will put them into the top ten for the first time in what’s felt like an age.
Newcastle on the other hand are in need of a win. They’ve won just once in their last seven league games, 2-1 against West Brom on 12th December. If they don’t put together a good run of results soon they risk being drawn into the relegation battle.

Early team news
Arsenal have been given a boost after a scan showed that Kieran Tierney’s calf injury was not serious and the left-back may be available to play. However, Pablo Mari is out and Gabriel Martinelli is a doubt.
Newcastle’s captain Jamaal Lascelles returned against the Gunners in a FA Cup match after recovering from Covid-19 and he may be fit enough for his first league appearance in two months.
Allan Saint-Maximin could also return after contracting the virus back in November with Jamal Lewis and Federico Fernandez being assessed before the game.
However, Ryan Fraser is suspended as a result of his red card against Sheffield United.
