“It is imperative that Unifor’s actions cease immediately so that our Windsor employees, suppliers and operations are not negatively impacted.”
The blockade is the result of a labour dispute between Local 444 and Motipark, which won the Stellantis contract to drive vehicles off the line, taking over from the Auto Warehouse Company.
AWC employed 60 workers, who were represented by Unifor.
The new contract took effect Jan. 1.
“Approximately seven months ago, Unifor was aware that Stellantis was initiating a competitive bid process for the releasing services at our Windsor Assembly Plant,” Gosselin said.
“Unifor represented the employees of the then incumbent service provider, AWC, who elected to participate in the bid process. Extensive discussions were held with AWC and other bidders throughout the process.
“In early December, all bidders were advised that Motipark was awarded the releasing services, starting January 1, 2021.
“Stellantis awarded the releasing services to Motipark based on established criteria, including cost, quality and technology.
“AWC accepted the results of the bid process and wound down their operations to allow for an orderly transition to Motipark.”
Unifor is claiming employment successor rights while Motipark has shown no interest in hiring the 60 Local 444 workers.
Local 444 President Dave Cassidy has previously stated Motipark’s employees start at $17.77 per hour while AWC workers made between $20 and $24 per hour.
