Since Jan. 5, the number of active cases has risen to 1,924 from about 900, Akufo-Addo said in a speech. There are now 120 severe cases, up from 18 a week ago.
Ghana is not yet close to a peak seen during the first wave of infections in the middle of last year, but could quickly reach that level if cases keep rising at the current rate.
If they do, the president said he would impose another partial lockdown, despite worries about what that would do to one of West Africa’s largest economies.

Malawi to close schools, make bars shut early to curb pandemic
BLANTYRE — Malawi’s schools are to shut for at least 15 days, and all bars must close at 8 p.m., under new coronavirus restrictions announced by President Lazarus Chakwera in a television address on Sunday.
After reporting no positive cases for almost two months, the country has seen a sudden resurgence in coronavirus cases since the middle of last month.
The new measures concerning schools and bars will take effect from Monday.

No change to Canada’s Pfizer vaccine shipments as company restores European supply
After announcing a reduction in vaccine shipments due to production delays, Pfizer-BioNTech is now resuming full shipments to European Union countries starting next week.
There’s no word, however, on the impact the announcement will have for Canada or Alberta, which said Friday the delay would push back the province’s vaccination schedule. Federal officials said the same day only half of its previously promised vaccine supply would arrive in the next month.
Pfizer-BioNtech said in an online statement released late Friday night it would return to originally schedule shipments in the European Union the week of Jan. 25, but did not address other countries.
“Pfizer and BioNTech are working relentlessly to support the further roll-out of the vaccination campaigns worldwide,” the statement read.
Federal Procurement Minister Anita Anand said on Twitter Saturday there was no update on the status of Pfizer vaccine shipments to Canada.
