As of Monday, personal and wellness services can reopen with safety protocols in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Shields said his schedule started filling up as soon as they opened it to their clients, so he expects the barbershop to be as busy as it can be over the next month while they meet government protocols.
“Those measures kept us safe then and will likely keep us safe now,” he said. “Financially, this lockdown would have been a mess without government funding. It’s still a little scary but with some government funding, you can know you’re not destitute and your rent is getting paid. Without that help, we would be closed for sure.”
The change in restrictions was announced on Thursday by Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, and Health Minister Tyler Shandro.
Personal and wellness services, including hair salons, barbershops, esthetics, manicure and pedicure businesses, reflexology, and piercing and tattoo shops can open by appointment only, with appointments limited to one-on-one services.
Outdoor gatherings capacity was raised to 10 people with appropriate physical distancing between households, removing the ban on them altogether, and funeral services can have up to 20 guests — with mandatory masks and two-metre physical distancing. Funeral receptions remain banned.
“We made these decisions very carefully and these measures were eased based on expertise and the advice of our chief medical officer of health,” Shandro said Thursday.
