This will be Kelly Loeffler’s most popular move as a WNBA owner.
The Atlanta Dream franchise is close to being sold, with Loeffler expected to no longer have any association with the team, ESPN reported.
In the summer, Loeffler wrote a letter to WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert, voicing her displeasure with the league supporting the Black Lives matter movement. Players around the WNBA responded by calling on her to sell her 49 percent share in the team.
When she declined, players publicly supported Rev. Raphael Warnock, her opponent in the Georgia Senate runoff. Warnock defeated Loeffler on Jan. 5.
This summer, Dream president Chris Sienko and majority owners Mary and John Brock had given financial information to interested buyers, ESPN previously reported. Brock and Loeffler have owned the team since 2012.
Lakers star LeBron James recently floated the idea of buying the Dream, but it is unclear if he is part of the bidding process.
“I have long welcomed additional partners as part of making sure that we continue to grow the team. But I will continue to remain part of the team,” Loeffler said in July.
That no longer appears to be the case.
