In a week where our country celebrated taking one giant step forward, Southern Charm, after an otherwise fun, enlightening, and important season, took several giant steps backward. Seriously, what even was that ending?
Let’s start with the positives (no pun intended): before the last 30 seconds of the episode, I felt as though Kathryn Dennis really showed some growth (yet again, no pun intended). She arrived at the Pringle/Shep/season finale bash at that beautiful house feeling nauseous, and rightfully so. She hasn’t felt supported by her friends, she knew she’d be confronted, and that has to suck. But she’s lucky. She’s lucky that she has friends that care enough to hold her accountable for her mistakes, that try to help her see their side of things, and that try to help her learn and move forward. And for most of the episode…things went ok. Not that disaster of a dock scene, of course, but that wasn’t Kathryn’s fault; that was Madison simply desperate for her last moments of camera time, as if any of us really needed that.
However, once Madison finally zipped it, the other women, including Leva, Venita, and Madison Simon, were able to calmly speak with Kathryn, who allowed herself to be open and vulnerable. It not only felt like progress was happening, but closure to this season as well. Shame on me for thinking this show could ever close out a season that way.
Because the final moments of the episode tell us that Kathryn and her boyfriend Chleb Ravenell are still together and flash forward to six months later when…Kathryn is taking a pregnancy test. She emerges from the bathroom (after the requisite tinkling and subsequent flushing sound can be heard behind the closed door) with a stick in her hand, sits down to examine it with a sigh, then hugs her knees to her chest and looks to the sky, while the results are never revealed to us. WTF.
Here’s why this sucks: Southern Charm did a really admirable job of evolving this season, of proving with every episode, this ain’t Season 1 or Season 2 or even Season 5 of this show. They were capable of capturing the same lovable goofs, even guaranteeing we’d get to see them at an awkward dinner party or two, but this time with a whole new slew of 2020 problems. To end a season that tackled a global pandemic, showing both the comedic aspects and consequences, as well as the Black Lives Matter movement, with yet another “oops maybe Kathryn is pregnant again!” but without actually revealing anything? This show is better than that. Really.
Because if Kathryn is actually pregnant, then this show missed a major opportunity to both officially (and classily) announce and celebrate the news. But if what she is posting on Instagram, as recently as yesterday, is to be believed, then she’s literally the fittest she’s ever been.
Was this one last-ditch attempt at sympathy for Kathryn? Because it was misguided as all hell. Did they think that they needed a little stunt like this because people wouldn’t be talking about the show? I’ve got the Twitter mentions and the inbox to prove otherwise. After a season that not only emphasized but depicted so much growth (some forced, some surprising, all necessary) this felt like a real amateur move — not to mention confusing, unnecessary, and completely out of place with the 10 previous episodes we just watched. Luckily, very much in line with the season is next week’s upcoming reunion which features…lots of hair and even more yelling.
The Southern Charm Season 7 reunion airs Thursday, January 28 at 9 pm ET/PT.
