Brian Williams mocking Trump with “Jerry Maguire” clip watched 1 million times

Brian Williams lambasted Donald Trump on The 11th Hour by poking fun of the former president’s meeting with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)—in a clip that has been viewed more than one million times.

The MSNBC host promised viewers “exclusive video” of the meeting but “accidentally” rolled the wrong clip.

Rather than showing footage as discussed, Williams played a classic scene from the movie Jerry Maguire, featuring the iconic “you had me at hello” line.

In a press release on Thursday, Trump’s Save America political action committee said the former president has agreed to help McCarthy and the Republican Party reclaim control of the House in 2022. The two had a discussion at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida in what the PAC described as a “very good and cordial” meeting.

“President Trump’s popularity has never been stronger than it is today, and his endorsement means more than perhaps any endorsement at any time,” the release said.

Williams poked fun at the appointment by suggesting that the two professed their love for each other much like Renée Zellweger and Tom Cruise do in the much-quoted 1996 romance film.

Many pundits had predicted that the meeting would see McCarthy swear allegiance to Trump after criticizing him for inciting violence at the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

Williams told his on-air guests, conservative pundit Bill Kristol and comedian Baratunde Thurston that they were about to see “what I’m told is the first exclusive video out of this meeting today between McCarthy and Trump.”

“We’ll watch it and react on the other side,” he said before cutting to Zellweger’s character Dorothy Boyd saying the line: “You complete me.”

Afterward, Williams quipped: “Obviously we have rolled the wrong clip. I thought this was going to be of the McCarthy and Trump meeting and someone’s gonna be, of course, in big trouble.”

Williams asked Thurston if McCarthy visited Trump to “kiss the ring, and God knows what else, meeting with the deposed former president in his under decorated Florida home.”

He added: “Is that because this is the only game they have, they badly need his supporters and the thing they fear the most is having his supporters turn against them?”

Thurston replied to say he was still “recovering from the clip.”

“Thank you and I’m mad at you right now for making me break so much,” he added.

Unsurprisingly, the gag went down a treat on Twitter where it is now doing the rounds having been shared by the likes of Joy Reid, Josh Gad and Billy Baldwin.
