HBO Max is finally releasing the Snyder Cut. Director Zack Snyder has announced that his long-awaited Justice League cut will debut March 18, exclusively on HBO Max. The director’s cut was first announced in early 2020, and various reshoots and re-editing were completed under COVID-19 precautions later in the year.
The release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League comes after a four-year-long fan campaign conducted under the #ReleasetheSnyderCut hashtag. The 2017 film was originally produced under Snyder’s direction, but his daughter died shortly after principal production wrapped, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon stepped in to overseen post-production. However, in addition to editing the film, Whedon also wrote and directed scenes that did not appear in the original script, prompting fans to question how much influence he had over the final cut.
Despite the date announcement, HBO Max and Warner Bros. have not clarified whether the Snyder cut of Justice League is a film or a television show. It was initially reported that the remake would be a four-part miniseries due to its length, but in January 2021, Snyder seemed to suggest that it would be a film, instead. When asked by a Vero user if the new Justice League would be a four-part series or a “one shot movie,” Snyder reportedly responded, “One shot.”
Regardless of how HBO Max chooses to package the project, it’s clear that Warner Bros. is fully committed to making Snyder’s (and fans’) dream a reality. According to The Wrap, reshoots for the project cost a reported $70 million, a figure that is even higher than the initial $30 million estimate. The hefty price tag is a result of Warners decision to reshoot full scenes with the original cast, including Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Jared Leto as the Joker.
For his part, Henry Cavill, who plays Superman in the DC franchise, told Collider in September 2020 that he is not participating in any reshoots. “It’s all stuff that has been already done,” he said at the time. “Obviously I don’t know how things are going to evolve and change and adapt depending on now a different length of movie and whatever may happen in post-production. Whatever lessons may be learned from what is it four years since Justice League came out? Four years’ worth of fan reaction. For me… I’m now just watching the party.”
