Biden visits wounded soldiers at military medical centre
President Joe Biden is urging Congress to “act now” on his $1.9tn Covid-19 relief proposal, saying there is an “overwhelming” consensus among economists that a stimulus package is needed to help Americans hardest hit by the pandemic.
Mr Biden said Democrat lawmakers must take action with or without cooperation from their Republican colleagues, adding that the cost of inaction in this “unique moment” is “high”.
“I support passing Covid relief with support from Republicans, if we can get it,” Mr Biden told lawmakers last night. “But the Covid relief has to pass with no ifs, ands or buts,” he added.
In other developments, Congresswoman Cori Bush is requesting that her office is moved away from Republican lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene for her own “team’s safety”.
Ms Bush, representative for Missouri’s 1st congressional district, said she and her staff had been “berated” by Ms Greene, representative for Georgia’s 14th congressional district.
“I didn’t move my office out of fear,” she said. “I moved my office because I’m here to do a job for the people of St Louis. “What I cannot do is continue to look over my shoulder wondering if a white supremacist in Congress is conspiring against me and my team. Our focus is St. Louis.”
Ms Greene, an avid supporter of Donald Trump, has previously expressed support for the baseless QAnon conspiracy theory and has been accused of racism.
The newly-appointed lawmaker is refusing to resign after social media videos emerged appearing to show her voice support for 9/11 and other conspiracy theories.

Biden visits wounded soldiers at Walter Reed
President Joe Biden made a visit on Friday to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland, where me met with wounded soldiers and thanked the military hospital’s staff for their service – as well as caring for his late son Beau in 2015.
“You’ve done a great deal for my family,” the president told hospital administrators as he was greeted by the director of the medical center. “My son Beau, after a year in Iraq, came back with stage four glioblastoma. They took care of him with great grace and dignity.”

Cori Bush moves her office away from ‘white supremacist’ Marjorie Taylor Greene for her team’s safety’
Congresswoman Cori Bush has requested that her office be moved away from Marjorie Taylor Greene’s office following “renewed, repeated antagonisation of the movement for Black lives”, Ms Bush said in a statement.
Earlier on Friday, the Democrat said that Ms Greene and her staff “berated” her in a hallway and “targeted” Ms Bush and others on social media. “I’m moving my office away from hers for my team’s safety,” she said.
In response, Ms Greene called Ms Bush “the leader of the St Louis Black Lives Matter terrorist mob who trespassed into a gated neighbourhood to threaten the lives” of the McCloskeys, a St Louis couple who pointed firearms at demonstrators.

Marjorie Taylor Greene refuses to step down amid outrage from parents of school shooting victims
Marjorie Taylor Greene does not intend to resign her position from Congress amid intensifying calls for her expulsion from members of Congress and parents of school shooting victims.
The newly appointed lawmaker has fielded significant scrutiny over the last few days, following the emergence of a number of alleged social media interactions and controversial videos on her YouTube page.
Certain uncovered social media posts have appeared to show Rep Greene supporting conspiracies surrounding the 9/11 attacks and various school shootings in the US, suggesting they were fake or inside jobs.

Biden calls for urgent passage of $1.9trn Covid relief
Democrats in Congress have signalled that they are prepared to pass Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief legislation, even without any significant Republican support.
The moves came as the president urged swift passage and administration officials and lawmakers point to a desperate need to act as the public health crisis enters its second year.
But Democratic leadership is hoping to rely on a filibuster-proof reconciliation measure only as a last resort, following months of deadlocked negotiations and GOP obstruction before Congress passed a $900bn Covid-19 relief package late last year.
