Mounties say impairment on hard drugs is suspected in a serious head-on crash in Surrey on Friday, the third drug-related driving incident this week.
Police responded to a crash at 152nd Street and Highway 10, one of the city’s busiest intersections, around 4:30 p.m. “Early indications are that a drug-impaired driver drove their Jeep through the intersection and into oncoming traffic,” said RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Elenore Sturko in a release.
An off-duty RCMP officer was in the area and attended to the Jeep driver, who was unresponsive and in cardiac arrest, apparently due to an overdose. Paramedics administered Narcan and the driver was taken to hospital.
Drug paraphernalia was found in the vehicle and the driver is facing an impaired driving charge, police say.
No one else was seriously injured in that crash or in the earlier two incidents, but police say that was pure luck.
“These incidents could easily have had tragic consequences for the drug users and for the other members of the public using the roadway,” said Sturko. “If you are a drug user, we strongly urge you not to drive, and we encourage you to seek help if you have an addiction.”
The two earlier impaired-driving incidents occurred within 24 hours of each other on Monday and Tuesday. A man allegedly caused a collision by driving into oncoming traffic in Whalley, and a man was found passed out in a vehicle containing drugs and paraphernalia in Newton.
Police say the Newton driver had a weapon in his waistband and a firearm was found in the vehicle.
Both those drivers were issued 24-hour suspensions and are facing other charges.
