Unifor and Via Rail announced Saturday they had reached a deal in principle to renew the collective agreement of more than 2,400 workers.
The deal covers maintenance staff, on-board personnel, chefs, salespeople and customer service agents at Via Rail, said the union, explaining it would see advances in workers’ rights. “With the current pandemic situation, our members are greatly affected,” said Unifor Quebec manager Renaud Gagné.
The two sides did not reveal the details of the agreement. They will be first presented to members, with votes in the coming weeks.
The new deal replaces the two-year deal that ended Dec. 31, 2019. Unifor said negotiations began in October 2019 and had been conducted the last few months virtually, with mediators from the federal government.
The employer said it was happy to have come to a deal and are looking forward to ratification. “This positive step reflects the engagement and the work done by both parties during this process,” said Patricia Jasmin, head of financial services for Via Rail.
