Mamadi Fara Camara, the Black doctoral student wrongly arrested and detained for six days on a charge he had assaulted a police officer, cancelled a planned appearance on popular Radio-Canada talk show Tout le monde en parle Sunday evening because he “is still extremely upset by the events,” said his lawyer, Cédric Materne, who did appear.
“He was frightened in jail; he is still in shock,” said Materne, a criminal lawyer. What happened to Camara is “extremely traumatizing,” he said.
“What happened to him is shocking.”
Camara, 31, was arrested on Jan. 28 after his car was pulled over by SPVM police officer Sanjay Vig on Crémazie Blvd. W. Camara was alleged to have disarmed Vig and fired at him. He was charged with disarming a police officer, using a firearm in an attempted murder, and using a firearm in an attempted assault.
After Camara had been detained for six days, police announced there was new evidence that exonerated him. On Friday, police Chief Sylvain Caron formally apologized to Camara and his family, saying the force had received DNA analysis results during the day that eliminated him as a possible suspect.
The arrest and detainment sparked a protest anddrew calls from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau andMontreal Mayor Valérie Plante for a thorough investigation. Plante raised concerns about racial profiling.
Tout le monde en parle host Guy A. Lepage asked Materne whether he believed racial profiling had been a factor in Camara’s arrest.
“It is too early to know,” Materne replied. “But one must ask the question.”
