Everton advanced to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after beating Tottenham 5-4 in an epic encounter that went to extra time at Goodison Park.
Having led 1-0, Spurs then went 3-1 down. However, they recovered to make it 3-3 before Richarlison’s second goal and Harry Kane’s header forced the match into extra time.
Bernard then settled the tie with a fine strike in the first half of extra time.
The game exploded into life in the first minute, when Erik Lamela had a header saved and Lucas Moura fired the follow-up over.
As such, it was not long before the goals flew in. After three minutes, Davinson Sanchez rose highest from a Son Heung-min corner to head into the corner, but Everton grew into the game.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a shot saved by Hugo Lloris, but the French goalkeeper could not keep out his next, more powerful effort.
Son and Lamela then had chances to put Spurs ahead, but instead their defence imploded and Everton went 3-1 in front.
Richarlison got onto a neat flick from Calvert-Lewin to finish in the bottom left corner, before Gylfi Sigurdsson finished from the penalty spot after Calvert-Lewin was brought down.
However, Lamela reduced the deficit three minutes into stoppage time, curling an effort across Robin Olsen’s goal.
The second half started with both teams in a lull – perhaps to be expected following the frantic nature of the first half. However, Spurs soon kept the goals flowing with an equaliser.
Spurs level up, but goals flowing
Sanchez, who had only scored one goal before this game, netted his second of the night after poking home from Robin Olsen’s reaction save after a corner.
However, the goals did not stop there. Sigurdsson played Richarlison through for Everton and the Brazilian fired powerfully across Lloris’ goal from an acute angle.
Everton pushed for a fifth, with Michael Keane having a header saved comfortably by Lloris. At the other end, England centre-back Keane cleared away from a dangerous Lamela cross.
But Spurs would not lie down. Son’s stepover allowed him space to fire a cross to the back post where – perhaps predictably – substitute Kane was waiting to stoop low and head in.
Bernard fires in eventual winner
As such, the game went into extra time and it was Everton who made the bright start.
Sigurdsson directed a well flighted ball over the top of the Spurs’ defence to allow Bernard to fire past Lloris to make it 5-4.
Everton were fast out of the blocks in the second half, Sigurdsson having a shot punched away.
Kane then headed just wide, but Carlo Ancelotti’s men held on for a famous win in an FA Cup tie for the ages.
