A Calgary man has been arrested after U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized 109 kilograms of cocaine from a commercial vehicle at the Port of Sweetgrass, Mont., on Jan. 30.
Officers assigned to the port of entry at the border encountered the truck driver while conducting outbound inspection operations. They referred the man and vehicle for further inspection.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a news release the driver is a Canadian citizen. An officer confirmed his address is in Calgary.
During an in-depth inspection of the vehicle, officers discovered boxes containing a substance identified through testing as cocaine.
“Our frontline CBP officers utilized their training and experience along with our high-tech tools and that effective combination led to the seizure of 240 pounds of cocaine in the cargo environment,” said Sweetgrass Port of Entry director Jason Greene in a statement.
“The ability to facilitate lawful trade and travel while maintaining a robust enforcement focus is a critical element to our border security mission.”
Officers arrested the man and turned the case over to the United States Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has not identified him further.
