The notorious Manhattan bank robber known as the “Burberry Bandit” because of his taste for designer clothes was slapped with a 13-count indictment by a federal grand jury for an alleged robbery spree in 2019 and 2020.
Cornell Neilly, who has been accused in state court of more than a dozen bank robberies since 2012, has also been hit with six bank robbery charges and seven attempted bank robbery charges in a federal indictment unsealed Thursday in Manhattan federal court.
The indictment alleges that from late June 2019 to July 10, 2019, Neilly attempted to rob or robbed nine Midtown banks.
On July 3, 2019, Neilly attempted to knock off a bank on Park Avenue near 33rd Street by passing a teller a note, but left empty-handed, according to the indictment. A short time later, he swiped $1,000 from a bank on Ninth Avenue near 55th Street.
The serial robber was indicted in state court after the spree, The Post reported at the time, but he continued to pull off heists in the winter of 2020, according to the federal indictment.
From Jan. 4 to Feb. 29, 2020, he attempted to rob three other banks and successfully knocked over one lender, the indictment states.
In his last successful heist, he swiped $3,000 from a bank on Third Avenue near 55th Street, according to the court papers.
Neilly was sprung from state jail in December 2019 because of New York’s bail reform law, The Post reported at the time. He had been free for less than a month before being arrested for robbing a Chase bank in Midtown.
Neilly was sentenced in 2014 to five to 10 years in prison for a string of heists he pulled off in 2012.
Twice bank surveillance video caught the felon wearing a $250 Burberry shirt while he handed robbery notes to tellers.
He was ordered detained by federal authorities after his arrest on Jan. 28, according to court records.
He’s scheduled to be arraigned on federal charges later this month.
