North India Earthquake: Earthquake of high magnitude jolted parts of Delhi-NCR and the neighbouring region on late Friday evening. Strong tremors were felt across the upper North India regions including Jammu, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand.
As per initial reports of the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake was termed 6.1 on the Richter scale and the epicenter was stated at Amritsar, Punjab. However, NCS later revised its statement informing Tajikistan to be the epicenter of the earthquake. NCS also mentioned that the earthquake was of 6.3 magnitude on the Richter scale.
So far, there are no reports of loss of life or damage to property in India.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted wishing for everyone’s safety.
Since Amritsar was stated as the epicenter of the earthquake initially, it was reported that the residents came out of their houses and described the tremors as “very strong”.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said top officials of Punjab Police and local administration are keeping a close watch on the situation after the earthquake.
