Dinesh Trivedi said he was unable to bear various incidents that were happening in West Bengal.
In a dramatic development, Trinamool Congress MP Dinesh Trivedi announced his resignation in the Rajya Sabha on Friday while the House was debating on the Union Budget, saying that he felt suffocated because he was unable to do anything even as violence went on in his State of West Bengal.
“There are instances in one’s life that one must listen to one’s conscience. This is one such instance. It is telling me that if you sit here quietly and cannot do anything, then it is better that you resign from here and go to the land of Bengal and be with people,” he said. Mr. Trivedi said he was unable to bear various incidents that were happening in West Bengal.
“I am grateful to my party that it has sent me here, but now I feel a little suffocated. We are unable to do anything and there is atrocity [going on]. My voice of conscience is saying what Swami Vivekananda used to say — arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached,” Mr. Trivedi said, announcing his resignation from the House.
In a quick reaction, TMC Chief Whip in the Rajya Sabha Sukhendu Sekhar Ray said, “Trinamool means grassroots. This will give us an opportunity to send a grassroot worker soon to the Rajya Sabha.”
