The time is long overdue for Windsor/Essex to have the modern hospital that residents need and deserve.
On Dec. 29, 2019, our 25-year-old son suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Thanks to the efforts of the people he was with and some excellent paramedics from Windsor/Essex EMS he was transported to WRH Ouellette Campus.
Although we have no complaints with the excellent staff and care received during this very stressful time, the need for a new modern facility became crystal clear.
Our son needed an implanted cardiac defibrillator, however, with our current facilities in Windsor, that had to be done in London. Not because doctors locally aren’t capable, rather the size and capacity of our facilities are unable to accommodate this procedure.
So now a 25-year-old father of a three-month-old child and all his family sat over New Year’s waiting to be transferred two hours down the road to have this life-saving procedure because our facilities couldn’t accommodate it.

Finally arrangements were made to transfer by helicopter (very cost-effective) to London. But since there was a bed shortage here, the ambulances were backed up in ER and none were available to do a transfer across the city to the airport.
Luckily an ambulance became free prior to the helicopter being redirected somewhere else.
Once in London many of the tests performed in Windsor were repeated causing even more costs to our health-care system.
Thankfully this story had a happy ending, but the added stress, potential bad outcome and excessive costs incurred by the health-care system are clear examples of why the new hospital locally is needed.
