“Stamps will be put on back of the hands of the patients staying at home quarantine. 300 marshals will be hired to keep an eye on people travelling in local trains without face mask. Besides, additional marshals will be hired to keep an eye on violators in Mumbai,” guidelines issued by the BMC stated.
The Maharashtra government has imposed strict curbs on Sunday in Amravati and Yavatmal – districts in the Vidarbha region – from Saturday 8 pm to Monday 7 am, sources said.
“Owing to rising cases, lockdown declared in Amravati District from Saturday 8pm to Monday 7 am,” said Shelesh Naval, District Collector, Amravati.
While in Yavatmal, the district collector said, only a partial lockdown will be imposed and large public gatherings won’t be allowed, Amravati will face a complete lockdown for the day.
In Yavatmal, schools and colleges will remain closed till February 28. Restaurants, function halls will operate at half capacity. Marriage ceremonies, too, will be held with less than 50 per cent capacity, assembly of 5 or more people will not be allowed, said Yavatmal District Collector MD Singh.
Restrictions are being put in place in Yavatmal district due to rising COVID19 cases. It is not a lockdown, Singh was quoted by ANI as saying.
As the lockdown will be imposed in Yavatmal from Saturday, the district administration has also denied permission for a “Maha Panchayat” of Rakesh Tikait scheduled for February 20.
While addressing an international workshop of neighbouring countries on Covid-19 management, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that there is a need to create a common regional platform to wage a joint war against the coronavirus pandemic.
“If the 21st century is to be the Asian century, it cannot be without greater integration among the countries of South Asia and Indian Ocean island countries,” PM Modi said at the virtual workshop attended by 10 neighbouring countries.
“Hopes of our region & world are focus on rapid deployment of vaccines. In this too, we must maintain same cooperative & collaborative spirit. Over the past year, our health cooperation has achieved so much: PM address workshop on Covid-19 Management with 10 neighbouring countries,” he said.
“Can our civil aviation ministries coordinate a regional air ambulance agreement for medical contingencies? Can we create a regional platform for collating, compiling and studying data about the effectiveness of COVID19 vaccines among our population?” said PM Modi.
PM Modi suggested a special visa scheme for doctors, nurses for quick travel during health emergencies at the Covid workshop with 10 countries.

As the Covid-19 situation in Mumbai raises alarm, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to depute 300 marshals at railway stations across by the end of the week to enforce the rule of wearing face masks in public places. The financial city has seen a spike in cases since local train services have resumed for the general public. On Wednesday, the city recorded 721 fresh cases, the highest single-day since January 7. Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar was too spotted travelling in a local train to spread awareness about the use of face masks among citizens.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, health officials believe the violation of Covid-safety norms while travelling in trains is a contributing factor to the uptick in the number of cases. To ensure Covid-19 appropriate behaviour among commuters, BMC will station 100 marshals on Western (WR), 100 marshals on Central (CR) Railway and 100 marshals on Harbour line.
The city’s Covid-19 tally mounted to 3,15,751 on Wednesday. The death toll in the city climbed to 11,426 with three new fatalities. For the last two days, the daily cases had remained below the 500-mark. More than 500 fresh cases were recorded for five straight days since February 10. Mumbai had recorded 461 new cases on Monday and 493 on Tuesday.
The number of recovered patients also increased to 2,97,522 as 421 more were discharged from hospitals on Wednesday. The number of active patients increased to 5,943 from 5,649 on Tuesday.
The average growth rate of COVID-19 cases in the city is 0.16 per cent and the average doubling rate is 436 days. With 18,685 COVID-19 tests done on Wednesday, the total number of tests increased to 30,58,146.
According to a BMC official, 8,400 persons — 1,767 healthcare workers and 6,633 frontline workers — were administered COVID-19 vaccine at 27 centres in the city, taking the total number of inoculated persons to 1,33,349. Of these 8,400 people, 393 were administered the second dose. With this, the total number of those who have been administered the second dose has risen to 676.
