Great hair—the effortless, shiny kind that has the bonus effect of lighting up your entire face and improving virtually every outfit—looks different for everyone. Each editor in the goop beauty department has a different hair type, so our favorite essentials in this midwinter moment are all over the map. Except when they’re not (hello, Rahua, we’re collectively more than a little into you!). Whether it’s maintaining blonde highlights with way fewer salon visits or keeping curls in healthy, shiny shape, here are our standout hair essentials this winter. (Bonus points for two totally different approaches to sustainability!)

Hair Type: Wavy
My hair issue: In the winter, the dry air can make my wavy hair dramatically less so, inducing a news-anchor-esque blowout look that I abhor. To encourage what curl is willing to exist at this time of year, I let the shower steam up the bathroom, brush my hair through only once, and hope for the best.
What works: A regular towel can rough up my hair into unfabulous frizz—something I didn’t fully appreciate until I tried this magical, chic, luxurious hair towel. There are hairstylists I know who avoid frizz by pressing sopping-wet hair between sheet after sheet of paper towels; this thin, light-as-air microfiber confection accomplishes the same frizz-fighting, curl-preserving thing with ease, not to mention relative sustainability. It also stays in a wrap much more easily than a regular towel and even includes a wide elastic band to secure it with (it hangs nicely on a hook, too).

Conditioning twice makes a huge difference in wave preservation, I think. So I condition in the shower, then spritz in this amazing, green-tea-infused leave-in before my only-once brush-through (extra brushing encourages frizz and, I suspect, extra straightness).

Hair Type: Curly and thick
My hair issue: While the dream is an effortless-looking, lustrous mussed halo of curls, the reality is often a thicket of burrs and knots that can look matted at the ends. I’m always looking for tricks to make my hair more manageable and defined—but not too defined.
What works: Moisturizing at every step gives me my fluffiest, smoothest curls, and I start with these nourishing shampoo and conditioner bars. The gorgeous shampoo lathers up without the drying detergents in conventional shampoo (dry hair quickly becomes tangled hair), and it easily sweeps away product buildup and grime, while treating my hair to moisturizing oils. I give the conditioner a minute or two to soak into my brittle ends—it restores with a blend of rich plant butters, leaving my hair shiny, healthy-looking, and smelling faintly of lavender and chamomile. (To help get the curl definition I want and make my hair more manageable through the week, I brush my conditioner-soaked hair in the shower, rinse, and don’t brush it again until the next wash, a week later.) Each bar lasts you many washes and eliminates plastic waste: The shampoo bar is equivalent to between two and three 8.4-ounce bottles of shampoo, while the conditioner bar equals two 8.4-ounce bottles of conditioner—brilliant.

Brush your curls in the shower—it’s the best advice ever! I smooth this giant paddle brush through all my kinks and knots while my hair is wet. The dense combination of boar and nylon bristles against my scalp feels like a straight-up head massage, detangles my ends like nothing else, and simultaneously sets my curl pattern and staves off frizz. Out of the shower, I let my curls dry and they always turn out shapely, glossy, softly mussed, and wondrously detangled. The best part? They remain that way for the entire week. (Occasionally, I do brush my hair during the week—it just feels so freaking good.)

Hair Type: Curly and fine
My hair issues: My fine, curly hair, which can get quite voluminous, sticks a little closer to my head in an undefined blob shape at this time of year. When there’s zero humidity, it tends to dry in a rough, no-oomph way. But I want my summertime body, with big bouncy curls that look shiny, loose, and airy.
What works: Every one of us in the beauty department loves the Rahua conditioner in the pink bottle. It leaves my very thirsty curly hair shiny and defined after I air-dry it. When I shake out my curls, I get the best volume, and they stay smooth and relatively frizz-free all day. I love to use big heaping dollops of this conditioner, so I go through bottles quickly. Which I feel infinitely better about now that Rahua has made these new sustainable full-size refill pouches, which cut plastic use by 90 percent. Genius.

This treatment works as well on my scalp as it does on my dry ends. It’s made with omega-9-rich rahua oil to moisturize, palo santo oil to balance the scalp, and hemp oil to soothe. I use it once a week, and sometimes I even leave it in overnight for the softest, healthiest-feeling hair ever. And the results stick around until I do it again the following week.

Hair Type: Straight and highlighted
My hair issues: Because of the pandemic, I’m making less-frequent salon visits to touch up my hair color. So I’m fighting to keep my cool blonde highlights bright and shiny as long as humanly possible.
What works: A good shampoo is the secret weapon for long-lasting, gorgeous hair color, and finding a clean one specifically for color-treated hair has been a challenge. This one fights dullness and brassiness like nothing else—so much so that my colorist DM’d me on Instagram to ask how I was keeping my color so fresh. Not only does my color last longer but my hair looks and feels significantly shinier and healthier.
After I’m out of the shower, I do a quick blow-dry with this brilliant adorable-looking, quick-drying dryer. It has a cold-shot button that works miracles for extra shine and frizz control, and it gives my hair instant lift and volume—something we all could use a little more of right now.
