Mohamed Salah could be recognised as “the most selfish player ever” by Graeme Souness – but the Sky Sports pundit insists his goals record for Liverpool justifies his actions.
The Egyptian moved to Anfield from Roma in a bargain £36.9m deal in summer 2017. He has been a major part of their success and now boasts a staggering 118 goals from 186 appearances.
Despite that, Salah isn’t always appreciated by the media and he continues to be linked with moves away from Anfield.
However, after netting 24 goals from 34 outings this season, Souness insists Salah deserves plenty of praise.
Appearing on Sky Sports’ Pitch to Post podcast, Souness praised Salah for his “consistency”.
“I have to say Salah is a star because, you come back to consistency, he scores goals every year,” Souness said.
“He’s also the most selfish player I’ve ever seen and that isn’t a problem for a striker.
“I’m sure his teammates wouldn’t be happy on occasion but he is a star.”

Souness brands Mane a ‘proper warrior’
The good news for Liverpool is that when Salah goes through the occasional lean spells, Sadio Mane usually gets among the goals.
The duo were both on the mark as the Reds cast aside their Premier League concerns to beat RB Leipzig in the Champions League this week.
And Souness believes Mane too also deserves plenty of praise after he hailed his fighting spirit.
“Mane as well – it’s a word you wouldn’t associate with Mane but he’s a proper warrior. I don’t think anyone gets an easy ride when you play against him.
“You could kick him in the first minute and then every five minutes after that. But he’ll be back after you at every turn, he’s a real player.”
