Montreal’s Luc Courchesne is among eight Canadian artists to be named winners of the Governor General’s Visual and Media Arts awards for 2021.
The winners were announced on Tuesday morning.
Courchesne is a Montreal visual artist, who has taught design at Université de Montréal and is a founding member of the Société des arts technologiques. He is known for creating interactive video installations, and his work can be seen in the permanent collection of Ottawa’s National Gallery of Canada. He is also known for a 20-minute video that he shot on Sept. 11, 2001 of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York in the immediate aftermath of the first plane crashing into the first tower. His footage caught the second plane crashing into the second tower. He happened to be in New York working on another project at the time.
This is one of many prestigious awards Courchesne has collected during his career. In 2019, he was awarded in 2019 the Prix Paul-Émile Borduas, Quebec’s highest award in visual arts.
The other winners are:
- Lou Lynn, Winlaw, B.C.
- Bryce Kanbara, Hamilton, Ont.
- Bonnie Devine, Toronto
- Cheryl L’Hirondelle, Toronto/Saskatoon
- Germaine Arnaktauyok, Yellowknife
- Lori Blondeau, Winnipeg
- Dempsey Bob, Terrace, B.C.
