Toronto police say human remains have been found and a man has been charged in connection to a missing person investigation that ultimately led to a fatal police shooting on Tuesday.
The macabre finding comes after police first attended an apartment building on George Street, near Dundas Street East, just before 4 a.m. Tuesday as part of an investigating into a missing woman.
According to the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), officers entered an apartment building and headed to a unit on the third floor. Shortly after entering the unit, officers got into an altercation with a man.
That man has since been identified as 45-year-old Gedi Ali Gedi.
The SIU said both officers shot at Ali Gedi with one of the bullets striking him in the chest. Paramedics rushed him to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but he died shortly after.
Police said that the missing person case was still under investigation, and on Wednesday they announced that human remains were found.
The remains have not yet been positively identified.
Orson York, 59, of Toronto, has been charged with indignity to a human body in connection to the investigation.
