LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was killed Thursday in a crash in the Lakewood area, Sheriff Alex Villanueva said.
The crash happened at about 9 a.m. near Del Amo and Paramount boulevards. The crash appeared to happen in the middle of the intersection and involve at least one other car, a silver Mercedes-Benz sedan.

The driver of the Mercedes-Benz was taken to a hospital and is in unknown condition.
Villanueva later confirmed the death appeared to be an accident.

“I can confirm this appears to be an unfortunate accident. The accident occurred around 9:00 AM. The @LASDHQ and I will be holding a news conference at @LKDLASD station at 1:00 PM to provide more details” he tweeted.
Dozens of sheriff’s vehicles were lined up to escort the deputy’s body to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. Villanueva is reportedly also going to take part in the procession.
No further information about the crash or the deputy was available.

Residents of the area say they believe the deputy is known for pulling over vehicles speeding and racing down Paramount Boulevard, and may have been going after a speeding driver just before the crash.
