City police are asking for the public’s help in cracking a homicide case involving a man killed outside a southwest restaurant.
At 11:20 p.m. last Friday, first responders found a man dead in a parking lot of Mazaj Lounge and Restaurant at 9223 Macleod Tr. S.W.
He’s been identified as 33-year-old Daniel Dudgeon.
Dudgeon’s family was at a Calgary police news conference Wednesday afternoon.
“My family and I have been devastated since finding out my son was killed,” said Dudgeon’s mother Wendy, who was visibly emotional. “I’m not able to sleep at night and it’s a struggle every morning to get out of bed.”
His mother said that Dudgeon liked to make people laugh and was always there for his friends.
“Whether moving or just needing someone to talk to, he would cancel plans to help out a friend no matter what time of day,” Wendy said.
“My heart is broken, so please, if you know anything, contact the police,” she added.

Police say witnesses may wrongly assume the information they have about the incident is irrelevant.
“We often see cases where multiple people have small pieces of seemingly insignificant information that become a critical lead when all the pieces are put together,” said Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm of the Calgary Police Service homicide unit.
“That is why it is so important that people don’t decide for themselves what is worth telling us, because they might decide not to give us some information that could be the last piece we need for the puzzle to make sense.”
Chisholm said only one witness who was in the vicinity of the fatal assault that night has helped with the case so far.
“We can’t speak to the motivation of people not wanting to come forward,” he said.
Police don’t believe the incident occurred inside the restaurant.
They’re asking anyone who was at the restaurant between 7 p.m. and closing time on Friday night to come forward, whether they witnessed anything or not. Since they first asked for more information, Chisholm said that only one person who was at the restaurant that night has come forward with information.
Police say most of their interviews are done over the phone.
Chisholm said police don’t believe the incident happened inside the restaurant and would not say whether or not Dudgeon was alone at the restaurant prior to the fatal incident, “to protect the integrity of the investigation.”
Witnesses can call the homicide tip line at 403-428-8877, or the police non-emergency line at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477.
