‘An experience’: Edmonton restaurants expand outside dining with domes
Edmonton restaurants are coming up with innovative ways to expand capacity, allowing patrons to dine both inside and outside amidst ongoing COVID-19 public health restrictions — and winter.
Along 124 Street are several bubbled eating areas extending off the sidewalk outside Tiramisu Bistro; owner Seble Issac, calls the domes ‘igloos’. She ordered the 70-square-feet heated, private eating spaces earlier this winter.
“People love it. Like they sit down they think they’re in Paris or something,” said Issac. “I’m very thankful that I got the opportunity to bring them here and to be able to put them on the street side.”

Anti-maskers and counter-protesters face off at Calgary city hall
Duelling demonstrations took place on Saturday afternoon, one week after a similar rally in Edmonton where hundreds of protesters and counter-protesters gathered at the legislature grounds.
Anti-racism protesters called out white supremacy as leaders of the anti-mask movement held tiki torches in front of Calgary city hall, reminding some of a deadly 2017 white nationalist torch rally in Charlottesville, Va.
There were about 150 anti-racism demonstrators who went to city hall to counter-protest about 500 anti-maskers who gathered for the “Walk for Freedom” march. Calgary police arrived just before the two crowds could clash, dividing the protests with a line of bikes on the sidewalk between city hall and Macleod Trail S.E.

Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine cleared for use in U.S.
Johnson & Johnson’s coronavirus vaccine was cleared for use in the U.S., making a third shot available that could plug gaps in the nation’s immunization campaign as concern grows over an influx of virus variants.
The Food and Drug Administration said in a statement on Saturday that it had granted an emergency-use authorization for the single-dose vaccine for people 18 and older.
The decision comes after the U.S. hit a sad milestone with 500,000 Americans dead from the virus, and at a time when health officials are raising alarms that recent declines in the number of new cases may be stalling.

The gym said they have not received any confirmation they will be allowed to reopen from the province but are preparing for the possibility of opening their doors Monday, the earliest day more public-health orders could be eased.

‘We can be better’: Head of AHS apologizes for troubles with vaccine appointment launch
Dr. Verna Yiu, AHS president and CEO, issued a public apology on Friday acknowledging that public confidence in their ability to deliver immunizations “has been shaken.”
“I want to publicly and personally apologize to anyone who experienced frustration, anger or worry over what should be a hopeful time in the pandemic response,” said Yiu in a statement.
“We made an error in judgement in how we stress tested our online booking system… We had planned for tens of thousands at a time, and demand far exceeded that, leading to technical issues that took several hours to resolve.”
