Former president Donald Trump denied he has any plans to found a new political party during remarks delivered Sunday at Florida’s Conservative Political Action Conference — branding the idea “fake news.”
As his term as commander-in-chief wound down last month, Trump was said to be considering forming a “Patriot Party” to distinguish his backers from more moderate Republicans, some of whom supported his impeachment over the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the US Capitol.
But Trump on Sunday called for unity within the GOP.
“We’re not starting new parties,” he told a cheering in-person crowd, during his first public speech since leaving office. “We have the Republican Party. It is going to unite and be stronger than ever before.
“That was fake news. Fake news,” continued Trump, sarcastically mocking what would have been a dubious strategy. “Wouldn’t that be brilliant? Let’s start a new party and let’s divide our vote, so that you can never win. No we’re not interested in that.”
