Canmore RCMP are searching for a man who fled police at a Saturday traffic stop where drugs and guns were found.
As of 2 p.m., the man is thought to be in the Rocky Mountain town’s downtown core.
At about 3 a.m. Saturday, RCMP initiated a traffic stop of two vehicles travelling together on Highway 1 near the Town of Canmore.
The driver of one of the vehicles stopped, and a police search of the vehicle led to the discovery of drugs and handguns. RCMP arrested the man and seized the drugs and guns. Charges are pending.
The driver of the second vehicle, a rented Hyundai SUV, fled. The car was found abandoned in Canmore on 7 Avenue shortly afterwards, and additional weapons were found in the SUV, RCMP said.
The man was again seen on 8 Street in Canmore at about 9 a.m., where he fled on foot, according to RCMP. He was also spotted in the town’s residential downtown area around 11 a.m.
RCMP said the man is of Middle Eastern descent and is in his late-20s to mid-30s. They described him as having a short stature and slender build. He was wearing a white hoodie, camouflage pajama pants and white shoes.
If any member of the public encounters the man, RCMP said they should not approach him and instead call 911 immediately.
