One day when I was going 100 miles a minute, I ran into my hormone doctor’s office to get my blood tested.
A beautiful girl was standing in front of me talking to the doctor. We ended up meeting, talking & as it turns out, she’s a member of The Skinny Confidential community.
Once we got talking, she told me her name is Amy Kerner & she’d been seeing our hormone doctor forever. She had accumulated a ton of tips & tricks since coming to LA. I was very intrigued.
Amy is smart, well-researched, & I felt like she would be a perfect person to have the blog. I wanted her to come on to talk about her health journey. In this post she’s going to share her experience with hormones, her relationship with food & the things that helped her get healthy.
Let’s welcome Amy to The Skinny Confidential.
♡♡♡
♡ Introduce yourself to The Skinny Confidential audience. We want your whole life story!
Amy Kerner: Hi TSC community!! My name is Amy & I am a lover of all things health, wellness, fashion, art & history. I am a city girl at heart who secretly wishes I was a homesteader.
I was born & raised in New York City & Westchester county New York. I now reside in Los Angeles, California. I still feel like I am either on vacation or in a witness protection program. I have learned to adapt to the lala lifestyle by hiking, and going to farmer’s markets to get the freshest fruits & vegetables & support our local farmers. I love how easy it is to find vegan restaurants here. Still a city chick but I have added southern Cali girl to my dossier.
♡ You have had a journey when it comes to hormones & food. Can you speak on that?
AK: I suffered from an eating disorder when I was younger. I never really share this part of me with anyone due to the shame & the stigma associated with it. It does not just go away, but you learn how to function in society. I have realized that with self love & healthy lifestyle choices it gets easier with time.
Regarding my hormones, one day I felt absolutely exhausted, depressed & had gained weight. All I was able to do was workout & then I was done for the day. Luckily I had an annual doctors appointment where I had literally just broken down hysterically to Dr. Aliabadi, who is absolutely the most amazing doctor.
She suggested that I come back the next morning to get my thyroid panel checked. This is a blood test where they check your hormone levels. Well let’s just say my thyroid was not working at all. I still to this day thank her all the time for this discovery.
This started my journey with living with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, which happens to be the most common cause of hypothyroidism. It is an autoimmune disorder involving chronic inflammation of the thyroid. Basically my thyroid doesn’t work & I go to a hormone specialist, Dr. Shirley Elzinga. She has been my saving grace & I’m so grateful to have her in my life.
♡ Looking back, what do you think started issues with food & how did you overcome those issues?
AK: I was always a perfectionist & a people pleaser. So food was something I could control & focus on when my life felt unmanageable. I am now able to use tools that I learned to keep myself healthy & happy.
♡ How has getting your hormones balanced helped with your overall health?
AK: I believe that getting my hormones balanced has been a game changer. I am so thankful that I listened to my intuition & knew something was not right. I was able to get to the root of the problem. Now I sleep better & have so much energy. I truly feel like a new person.
♡ What tips would you give to someone struggling with food?
AK: I think to find a therapist who you feel comfortable with & who specializes with eating disorders. I concentrate on eating whole fresh food. I never leave the house without a snack & water. If I am organized & prepared I feel confident for success.
♡ What tips would you give to someone struggling with their hormones?
AK: I would go get your hormones tested to get a clear understanding of what your baseline is to then figure out what is off. Then find doctors that specialize in hormones. Then you can start to treat what is wrong.
♡ What is your most beneficial, tangible list of tools that helped you get healthy?
AK: I concentrate on eating fresh organic fruits & vegetables. Food is medicine. I also do @issacboots full body workout every day. It challenges me & keeps me feeling absolutely fantastic. I have learned to listen to my body when it needs rest too.
I am also aware of who I allow in my life. I stay away from toxic people & situations. This has allowed me to trust my intuition.
♡ What are some wellness practices you do every day to check in with yourself?
AK: My number one practice is movement. It helps with my mind, body & my soul. It also helps me stay accountable, especially during COVID. Also I take organic selenium 200 mcg which I get from NOW foods & Vitamin D3 5000 iu. I have been limiting my caffeine & I really see a difference.
♡ What is your morning routine?
AK: I first take my thyroid medicine with a glass of water on an empty stomach. I then have a cup of black coffee. While I have my coffee I massage my face with a Glossier Super Glow serum & then use a jade gua tool for at least 10 minutes.
At 8 o’clock I do @isaacboots TORCHED workout on instagram live EVERY DAY. He offers free workouts & has raised over a million dollars for the charity NO KID HUNGRY. He has built a beautiful community where everyone is welcome.
♡ What is your nighttime routine?
AK: I love to end the day with a hot shower & Epsom salt bath. I use Babor cleansing foam wash, Biologique Recherche lotion P50 1970, & Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night oil as of late. Xx
♡ Where can everyone find you? Pimp yourself out!
AK: You can find me on Instagram @amyrkerner.

As I’ve said before on the blog, & on the podcast, getting my hormones checked after I had Zaza was one of the best things I ever did. I was just not myself.
Hope this post brought you value & if you’re not feeling like yourself, maybe it has inpsired you to do some research, be your own guru & get your hormones checked.
x, lauryn
