The European Parliament will rename two of its buildings in Brussels after women in honor of International Women’s Day.
The assembly’s bureau said on Tuesday that one building would be named after anti-Nazi resistance activist Sophie Scholl while another would be named after Spanish feminist politician Clara Campoamor.
Scholl, who was executed aged 21 in 1943, was a member of the pacifist White Rose resistance group in Nazi Germany. Campoamor, who died in 1972, spent her life campaigning for the equal treatment of women and helped to enshrine women’s suffrage in the 1931 Spanish constitution.
Meanwhile, Brussels transport operator STIB said on Monday that it planned to permanently rename 17 bus and tram stops after women within three years. It had temporarily changed several station names for International Women’s Day.
The Parliament said it would also rename a meeting room after former Greek MEP and anti-Nazi resistance fighter Manolis Glezos, who died last year.
