Team selection advice
Goalkeepers
After collecting his 14th clean sheet of the 2020-21 season, Emiliano Martinez (5.4m) is now only 39 points behind Brad Friedel’s FPL goalkeeper record of 187 set back in 2003.
The Aston Villa No.1 is the obvious pick for Gameweek 28, with Dean Smith’s side facing a Newcastle United side who are without a win in any of their last four matches.
The Martinez pick also makes sense with one eye on Gameweek 29, with Villa – who host Tottenham on March 21 – one of eight teams to feature in a reduced gameweek.
Defenders
Luke Shaw (£5.2m) is becoming a very handy FPL asset to possess in your armoury, with the Manchester United full-back producing a polished display in the 2-0 win over champions-elect City to claim a 14-point haul.
The 25-year-old is in the best form of his career at the moment and there’s the added bonus that he’s been assigned to corner-taking duty, boosting his potential to claim the odd assist.
United face a tricky test against high-flying West Ham next but Shaw, who has started every league game for the Red Devils since Gameweek 21, is sure to be heavily involved as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side aim to finish second in the table.
Elsewhere, Aston Villa’s push to finish in the European places is far from over as they head into the latest FPL gameweek in ninth place in the table, with their defensive players having performed particularly well over the course of the 2020-21 season.
Smith has a settled back four that he rarely rotates and for that reason Ezri Konsa (£4.6m) represents excellent value, with the centre-back having claimed 97 points so far this season.
Add in to the mix that Villa are the only side that still have 12 games left this season – guaranteeing at least one double gameweek – and having at least one defender from the west Midlands club makes perfect sense.
Midfielders
Gareth Bale (£9.4m) hasn’t played a full 90 minutes for Tottenham in the Premier League since May 2013 but his haul of 35 points across his last three matches make him a very appealing transfer option heading into Gameweek 28.
Indeed, he’s had to work hard to play his way into Jose Mourinho’s starting XI but, barring any fitness issues potentially suffered in Thursday’s Europa League clash with Dinamo Zagreb, it would seem certain he’ll be in from the start against Arsenal.
Our advice in the past had been to flood your teams with Manchester City defenders although with Guardiola’s side having failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last four league matches, it’s probably time to abandon that strategy.
Second-guessing the City boss and his team selections has been an FPL struggle for years now although Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) is one man who you can expect to see on most teamsheets with a degree of certainty.
The Belgian, who has been absent for a fair chunk of the season due to injury, was back to his point-scoring best on Wednesday night as his two goals and two bonus points resulted in a 14-point return.
Another City star whose form should help him curry favour with Guardiola is Riyad Mahrez (£8.1m).
The Algerian has produced a return of either a goal or assist in all but one of his last six matches and with him having been taken off after 60 minutes of his two-goal showing against Southampton, he should be back in the XI for the trip to Fulham on Saturday.
Forwards
Heading into a north London derby, and coming off the back of a 19-point return in his last match, Harry Kane (£11.3m) is a must-have selection for both Gameweeks 28 and 29.
Tottenham face Aston Villa after their meeting with Arsenal at Emirates Stadium, in what will be a blank gameweek for 12 Premier League teams, so getting Kane in your team now would be a wise move.
Kelechi Iheanacho (£5.6m) is another in-form striker that offers a value-pick differential option.
The Leicester City striker has two goals and 18 points from his last two league matches and should continue to partner a goal-shy Jamie Vardy (£10.2m) in attack – the 34-year-old having scored just once in the league since Gameweek 15.

Who is the best captain pick for Gameweek 28?
Last week’s suggestion came up big for us, with De Bruyne (£11.8m) starring in the second of his double gameweek fixtures to secure 32 points for those who gave him the armband.
And we’re hoping for a similarly impressive return this week, with Spurs striker Kane (£11.3m) being our captain pick, given his impressive record in north London derbies coupled with the fact he was in such devastating form last time out against Crystal Palace.
