Former Newcastle United striker Marlon Harewood has called on the players of his old club to help Callum Wilson in an exclusive interview with Football FanCast.
Wilson has been in excellent form for the Magpies this season following his move from Bournemouth in the last summer transfer window, currently ranking as their top scorer in the Premier League with 10 goals.
The 29-year-old, however, has recently been out injured, coinciding with Newcastle’s bad run of form. Steve Bruce’s side have not won any of their last four games, drawing 0-0 with West Brom in their previous fixture, and Harewood believes they have become over-reliant on their leading No.9.
Speaking about his former side and Wilson, Harewood exclusively told FFC:
“They’ve got so much ability there to do really well with the players and calibre. But, yet again, it’s just not really gone for them this year.
“Whatever they tried to do and how they tried to do it… it’s just a striker of his calibre, he needs help as well, every striker needs help I think. You can’t just rely on him, but what he’s been asked to do, he’s tried his best to do that and he’s done really well considering the situation.”
Indeed, in front of goal is an area Newcastle have really been struggling in, especially in the absence of Wilson.
After the England international, Miguel Almiron is the team’s next highest goalscorer with just four strikes registered to his name. Jeff Hendrick and Allan Saint-Maximin follow next with just two, really showing the lack of firepower at St. James’ Park right now.
With Newcastle now firmly in the conversation when it comes to relegation, Bruce needs his attackers to start firing.
