AstraZeneca has again cut down its forecast for coronavirus vaccine deliveries to the European Union in the first quarter of 2021, telling the EU officials it expects to only provide about 30 million doses by the end of March, according to a document dated March 10 and seen by Reuters.
AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot had told MEPs on February 25 that the company would try and deliver 40 million doses by the end of March, already a stark drop from the target of 80 to 100 million doses written in the contract between the European Commission and the firm.
According to Reuters, the EU can expect a further 20 million doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab in April.
“I see efforts, but not ‘best efforts.’ That’s not good enough yet for AstraZeneca to meet its Q1 obligations,” Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton said Thursday evening on Twitter. “It’s time for AstraZeneca’s Board to exercise its fiduciary responsibility and now do what it takes to fulfill AZ’s commitments.”
As of March 7, AstraZeneca has delivered slightly more than 11 million doses to the EU.
AstraZeneca did not immediately respond for comment.
