Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has is in the final stages of securing a ‘dream’ move away from Anfield, according to a report.
Wijnaldum‘s future has proved one of the main sub-plots of Liverpool’s season so far.
The Dutchman has continued to be as reliable as ever in the Reds’ engine room, amid swirling uncertainty over whether he will be at the club next season.
Wijnaldum’s contract expires at the end of the campaign and no concrete news over an extension has so far surfaced.
Indeed, the player himself admitted earlier this week that he had “no news” over his situation.
Barcelona wanted to sign the 30-year-old last summer, but their crippling financial situation prevented a deal.
But with the prospect of Wijnaldum becoming a free agent, the Spanish giants have retained – and increased – their interest.
So much so that Football Insider claims that a deal to take him to Camp Nou is ’95 per cent done’.
The report, quoting a source, claims that he has dreamed of moving to Barca since boyhood.
Barcelona have lurked in the background, the source adds, and now feel ‘confident’ of wrapping the deal up.
In any case, Football Insider adds that Wijnaldum’s chances of staying at Liverpool look slim. Negotiations with Reds chiefs remain in ‘deadlock’, with no way out in sight.
The player made the most Premier League appearances of any Liverpool midfielder last term.
This campaign, meanwhile, he has remained a stoic figure amid a host of Anfield stars suffering injuries.
Interestingly, he also admitted earlier this week that he would feel “devastated” to leave Liverpool.
Wijnaldum backs Salah to continue form
Should Wijnaldum leave Liverpool this summer, he is unlikely to go out on a high.
The Reds face a struggle to reach the Premier League’s top four and are unlikely to go all the way in the Champions League.
Nevertheless, Mohamed Salah’s form has proved an uplifting story amid a dismal downturn in form.
