Carolina Marin said she will not be participating in the All England Championships as she wants to recover from an injury she suffered during the Swiss Open.
Carolina Marin announced that she will not be taking part in the All England Championships, which begins Wednesday in Birmingham. The Olympic champion said on Sunday that she withdrew due to injury.
“Unfortunately I won’t be able to play next week at the All England because of the injury I suffered during the Swiss Open. I’ll be back soon!,” Marin tweeted.
Marin was the top seed at the All England Championships.
“Me and my team thought that it would be better to take care of the injury that I suffered during the Swiss Open,” Marin was quoted as saying by TOI.
Marin had defeated India’s PV Sindhu in the final last week.
“Since the All England is not part of the Olympic qualification I want to recover fully from the injury,” Marin added.
Marin’s withdrawal clears the road to the final for Sindhu. Sindhu was slated to meet Marin in the semi-finals and can come across either Ratchanok Intanon, Saina Nehwal or Nozomi Okhura, provided she gets past Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in the quarters.
World No.1 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei is also not participating in the All England Championships as so are the Chinese, who too are not competing.
