Kevin Phillips believes it is the next “natural” step for a Leeds-linked Rangers title winner to move to the Premier League.
Rangers are fresh off breaking Celtic’s nine-year stranglehold on the Scottish Premiership.
Steven Gerrard’s side marched to the summit of Scottish football, but with that comes the increased attention from those south of the border.
One player in particular who has been frequently linked with a move to English sides is Ryan Kent.
The ex-Liverpool winger has taken his game to the next level under Steven Gerrard. 11 goals and 13 assists have been notched in all competitions to go along with several impressive displays in Europe.
Leeds were once heavily linked with the 24-year-old. Club chief Victor Orta even detailed their failed attempts to sign him last summer in October.
However, with Leeds’ return to the top flight an unqualified success and Rangers’ main goal achieved, Philips believes the time is right for the Yorkshire outfit to reignite their interest.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Phillips said: “I think there will be a few teams sniffing around a few of the Rangers players.
“It’s just natural. How many times have we seen it over the years? If you go up there and do well then your next move is to the Premier League.
“Ryan Kent, Leeds have obviously been linked with him and made moves for him before. He’s a Scottish champion now so why would Leeds not look at it again?
“He’s certainly a player that a lot of Premier League teams will be looking at. The big job for Stevie G is to convince him to stay and go again.”
Rangers will be understandably reluctant to sell, but the riches of a Premier League offer could be difficult to ignore. Additionally, Leeds may soon be facing an issue regarding depth on the wings.
Leeds trio’s futures unknown
Current stars Raphinha, Jack Harrison and Helder Costa currently occupy the club’s depth chart at winger. Youngster Ian Poveda provides further depth, though has rarely been called upon to feature this season.
The aforementioned trio are all facing uncertain futures, potentially increasing the need for a summer splash.
Raphinha, 24, has been a revelation, but his impressive outings have attracted strong interest from Liverpool, Man Utd and Bayern Munich.
Harrison has adapted to life in the top flight well, but remains on loan from Man City.
A recent report detailed the amount the club will seek when finally looking to cash in this summer. Whether Leeds are willing to pay, however, is another matter.
Costa, meanwhile, could be axed with Bielsa reportedly ‘disappointed’ with his displays.
