The OnePlus 9 series introduces the company’s most advanced flagship smartphones yet in the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro. They bring OnePlus‘ biggest leap in camera quality alongside improvements to display, charging and processing technologies.
Design and build
On the OnePlus 9 series, you find a nature-inspired design. It offers a stylish look and feel that allows for comfortable usage. The OnePlus 9 Pro also offers additional IP68 water and dust resistance, something not found on the OnePlus 9. While both designs are sleek, they also sport a glossy finish different from the typical matte finish we find on flagship smartphones these days.
Camera system
The biggest change on OnePlus’ flagships is the camera. The quad-camera setup on the OnePlus 9 Pro sports a primary Sony IMX789 sensor with a 48MP f/1.8 lens, an ultra-wide Sony IMX766 sensor with a 50MP f/2.2 freeform lens to minimise distortion, an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto lens featuring 3.3x optical zoom and a 2MP monochrome camera. The OnePlus 9 sports a different primary Sony IMX689 sensor with a 48MP f/1.8 lens, the same 50MP ultra-wide and 2MP monochrome cameras although drops support for the telephoto camera.
With Hasselblad’s backing, the camera system offers improved colour calibration. It has worked with the company to optimise hundreds of real-life scenes through computational photography. According to OnePlus, this will result in accurate and natural-looking colours from both the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro. Both smartphones also come with 8K 30fps video recording and a Sony IMX471 sensor with a 16MP f/2.4 lens for selfies.
Fluid Display 2.0
On the OnePlus 9 Pro, you find a 6.7-inch 20.1:9 QHD+ resolution display. This is an AMOLED LTPO panel with a refresh rate that can adjust between 1Hz to 120Hz to save power. On the other hand, the OnePlus 9 boasts a 6.55-inch 20:9 FHD+ resolution display. This too is an AMOLED panel going up to 120Hz although without LTPO technology. Both the smartphone displays come with HDR10+ coverage and a DisplayMate rating of A+.
Performance
With support for 5G, both the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 octa-core processor. This is a flagship 5nm SoC known to deliver lightning-fast speeds and unprecedented power. Coupled with the processor, you find 8GB of DDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage on the base variants of both smartphones. This can be further bumped up to 12GB of DDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage if you decide to go with this variant. Like all OnePlus flagship devices, we do not find support for microSD card expansion.
Battery
There is a 4,500mAh battery on both the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro. Each smartphone supports Warp Charge 65T, which is essentially 65W wired charging. This takes either phone from 0-100 per-cent in just 29 minutes. On top of this, the smartphones also support varying levels of wireless charging.
With the OnePlus 9 Pro, you find Warp Charge 50 Wireless support, allowing you to wirelessly charge the smartphone in just 43 minutes. The OnePlus 9 on the other hand supports 15W Qi wireless charging. Thankfully, the charging brick and cable for both smartphones is included out of the box.
Pricing and availability
The OnePlus 9 series will go on sale beginning April 2 with pre-orders starting on March 26. The OnePlus 9 Pro starts at $969 (Dh3,559.10) whereas the OnePlus 9 starts at $729 (Dh2,677.59). We have not heard anything about local availability and pricing as of yet but we will keep you informed as we learn more.
