A gunman killed at least six people, including a police officer, during a mass shooting at a Colorado grocery store, reports say.
The violence unfolded at the Kings Sooper store in Boulder on Monday afternoon and the shooter’s motive has not been determined, law-enforcement officials told the Wall Street Journal.
A partially clothed white male was seen being led away from the scene in handcuffs with blood covering his leg.
Boulder police have not officially confirmed any details of the shooting and are expected to hold a press conference on Monday evening.
“My heart is breaking as we watch this unspeakable event unfold in our Boulder community,” said the state’s governor Jared Polis in a statement on Twitter.
At a press conference Boulder Police Department refused to confirm the exact number of people killed but confirmed that there were “multiple fatalities.”
“There was loss of life, we have multiple people who were killed in this incident and I am sorry to have to report the one was a Boulder police officer,” said Commander Kerry Yamaguchi of Boulder Police Department.
“There is no ongoing public threat we have a person of interest in custody, that person was injured during the incident and is being treated for the injuries.”
Authorities confirmed that they had a suspect in custody but that person was being treated for injuries at hospital.
“The only injured party we are aware of was the suspect. We know of no other serious injuries at this point,” added Commander Yamaguchi.
The police chief said that his department did not know the exact number of fatalities had occurred.
But District Attorney Michael Dougherty later confirmed that authorities do have an exact number of victims but are still informing family members.
