The Razer Viper line that came out in 2019 has been a familiar staple for gamers who wanted a competitive mouse. It’s light, responsive and has a subtle design. The Razer Viper 8K on the other hand, pun intended, is a weapon of choice for gamers who want the absolute best in speed.
The Viper 8K is Razer’s fastest mouse, it comes chock full of its premium tech, the best optical trigger system and a blazing fast 8,000 Hz polling rate. If you ever get a chance to upgrade your PC to some high specs, this mouse would be the perfect companion.
Design
On the outside, not much has changed between the original Viper and the 8K. It’s got a design that’s suited for both left and right handed players, with the button mapping identical on either side. The mouse is also rubber gripped on the back end so you won’t lose grip during intense firefights.
The Viper 8K in my opinion is purely a FPS based mouse but you’ll also find the speed boost great in certain other titles like League of Legends or a top down real time strategy game.
The Viper 8K has a lot going on the inside however. Razer has made the bold claim that you’re getting a near 99.6% accuracy, which esports players look for. the DPI has gone up from 16K to 20K and the speed is 650 inches per second.
In simple terms, when a mouse send information on an action, there are nanoseconds of delay between the moment of a button press and a screen refresh, and Razer is stating that their new polling rate reports the Razer Viper’s position around 8,000 times a second. Hence the name, 8khz
There are a minimum list of requirements to use this kind of mouse polling tech since it does draw a certain amount of CPU power for the mouse and you’ll need a display with a high refresh rate to even be able to notice it.Razer has recommended at a minimum, an Intel Core i5 8600K or AMD R5 3600 along with a Nvidia GTX 1080 or AMD RX 5700.
You’ll also need a mouse with a refresh rate of 144 hz or better. Currently with a global shortage of CPU parts, it’s cool that Razer has made the minimum list of requirements from the Nvidia 10th series GPU which most pro gamers may already have.
If you’re curious as to why the GPU is a requirement for the mouse, that’s because Razer is clear that they don’t want you to use a mouse that may lower even a single frame so it uses both CPU and GPU to work smoothly. Razer has also allowed gamers to downgrade to a 4K polling rate at 125 hz. Think of this mouse as future proofing for a better system.
Performance
I noticed the Viper 8Khz polling rate help me in three situations, all first person shooter based games. Doom Eternal, Destiny 2 and Overwatch. These games can get insanely frantic in a very short span of time and the high polling rate certainly helps.
Tracking is super responsive and it’s a nifty piece of gaming gear that I’m sure more professional players will definitely get a lot of use from it but overall as a normal gaming mouse, it still checks all boxes and if you’re a razer fan looking to upgrade to 2019’s Viper, it would make sense to just get this one instead.
Verdict
The Razer Viper 8Khz is Razer planning for the future, one where more gaming companies will make extreme high performance hardware for esports players that can be mass marketed. The 8Khz is very niche and it’s a mouse that does require a high end spec to even to be able to take advantage of it. Despite all the barriers to get it, when it does work, it gives a bit of a competitive edge one that while a regular gamer can’t see, a pro player will.
