Newcastle United midfielder Miguel Almiron has cast further doubt on his future with the club after a derogatory comment towards his team-mates.
Almiron, 27, has been at St James’ Park since January 2019. But it seems as though his days on Tyneside may be numbered.
Questions over his future have already been raised after comments from his agent. Daniel Campos hinted earlier this season that the Paraguay international is ready to quit the north-east outfit.
He told a Paraguayan radio station that only the pandemic has kept him with the Magpies, with a summer exit likely. His representative claimed that ‘big English clubs’, along with Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan were keen.
It is open to debate as to whether that is true but an exit does appear the most likely course of action. In February he spoke about his ambitions to play for Argentinian club River Plate, saying it was one of his “dreams”.
But the former Atlanta United ace has always stated that he is ‘happy’ at Newcastle. However his latest words may cause fans to doubt whether that is true.
“I would like to play in a team that fights more,” he told Paraguayan radio station ABC Cardinal (as per The Chronicle) on Friday.
Almiron lifts lid on Newcastle life
Almiron has shown glimpses of his undoubted talent but has lacked consistency for Steve Bruce’s side. He scored four Premier League goals last term and has four in 2020-2021 to date.
He had been due to play for Paraguay this week but the World Cup qualifiers were postponed due to Covid. And he took the spare time to reveal to fans how it is to play for Newcastle during the pandemic.
“My family and I are fine, we try not to go out too much. We have to be grateful that we are healthy,” he added. “Mentally, I’m fine and wanting to play with La Albirroja.
“I go to the club two hours before, we wear masks, we can only get out to eat, we are separated and we follow a very strict protocol.
“Thank God with the work here at Newcastle I am already training normally.”
The former Lanus man looks set to play a pivotal role in Newcastle’s fight for survival. They are just two points above the relegation zone but have a game in hand on 18th-placed Fulham.
Next up is a home clash with Tottenham before Bruce takes his troops to Turf Moor to face Burnley.
