Biden attacks Georgia over ‘Jim Crow’ voting law as Trump says he’s happier off Twitter – follow live

The right-wing network’s Peter Doocy attempted to argue his employers were not getting a fair hearing from the Biden administration at yesterday’s daily briefing but Jen Psaki was not having any of it.

Under fire Peach State leader Brian Kemp has issued a statement to The Hill rubbishing Biden’s remarks on Georgia’s new voting restrictions.

“There is nothing ‘Jim Crow’ about requiring a photo or state-issued ID to vote by absentee ballot – every Georgia voter must already do so when voting in-person,” he said.

“President Biden, the left, and the national media are determined to destroy the sanctity and security of the ballot box,” he went on, claiming it was “obvious” that the president and his White House aides have not actually read the wording of the new law.

“As secretary of state, I consistently led the fight to protect Georgia elections against power-hungry, partisan activists,” Kemp insisted.

“As governor, I won’t back down from keeping Georgia elections secure, accessible, and fair.”

Which is all very well, but Biden isn’t the only high-profile Democrat not convinced…

Biden has invited Beijing and Moscow to return to global climate crisis talks, hoping to bolster international cooperation on the issue and unite the superpowers.

It’s a necessary move but one that comes right on the heels of the new president being overtly critical of counterparts Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, taking the former to task over democratic principles and the persecution of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang and labeling the latter “a killer” over the apparent Kremlin-sponsored poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

Donald Trump has meanwhile claimed in an interview with Laura Ingraham on Fox News that he actually prefers sending out press releases from his secluded Florida resort home of Mar-a-Lago to being on Twitter

Joe Biden has derided the sweeping elections bill signed into law by Republicans in Georgia – introducing tough new voting restrictions that many regard as discriminatory – as “Jim Crow in the 21st Century” and “an atrocity,” saying his Justice Department will be “taking a look” at the measure.

Following the passage of the ballot restrictions and the arrest of black lawmaker Park Cannon in the Peach State, Biden urged members of Congress to pass the For The People Act, a massive voting rights bill to combat the wave of suppressive legislation being pushed by the GOP across the country in the wake of Donald Trump’s election defeat.

The president also called Georgia’s bill, signed into law by state governor Brian Kemp on Thursday – as well as dozens of other similar bills in at least 43 states – a “blatant attack on the Constitution and good conscience”.

“This is Jim Crow in the 21st Century,” he said in a White House statement on Friday. “It must end. We have a moral and Constitutional obligation to act. I once again urge Congress to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to make it easier for all eligible Americans access the ballot box and prevent attacks on the sacred right to vote.”

He said he intends to “take my case to the American people – including Republicans who joined the broadest coalition of voters ever in this past election to put country before party”.

“If you have the best ideas, you have nothing to hide. Let the people vote.”
