Travelling from the UK to Spain
Spain lifted its travel ban for UK arrivals on March 30th after entry restrictions that were in place for more than three months to stop the spread of new coronavirus strains.
This has opened the door for more Britons to fly to Spain – even though holidays abroad are still not allowed by the British government – as people in the UK are now allowed to travel abroad to buy, rent, let out or sell a second home.
For Spanish nationals and British residents in Spain, entry to Spain continues to be possible as long as travel rules are followed.
Since November 23rd 2020, Spain’s pre-travel COVID-19 testing requirements are in place for those travelling by air and sea from ‘risk’ countries (as determined by the European Centre for Disease Prevention & Control). Arrivals from the UK, and many other countries, are currently subject to this requirement.
Britons who can travel to Spain must provide a certificate showing a negative result for a PCR, TMA (Transcription-Mediated Amplification) or a LAMP (Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification) swab test taken within no more than 72 hours prior to arrival. Children under the age of six don’t require a test.
The cost of PCR tests varies quite widely depending on different providers and different areas. The British consumer group Which? found that the average cost of a test in the UK is £102 (€120) per person, but tests cost up to £350 (€410) in some areas. The charges are the same for UK residents and non-residents.
LAMP tests, which tend to be cheaper and faster than PCR tests, are available at several British airports such Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton and Manchester.
Usually they deliver results in around 60-80 minutes and cost around £85 (€100).
According to our research, TMA (Transcription Mediated Amplification) tests are not as readily available in the UK.
Travelling from Spain to the UK
Like Spain, the UK also requires a negative Covid test for people travelling from Spain, taken within the previous 72 hours.
PCR tests in Spain can cost as little as €100 (£85) in some parts of the country but according to Spanish consumer watchdog OCU the price usually ranges from €130 to €240 (£110 to £204).
Once you get to the UK you are required to quarantine for 10 days, but this can be done at an address of your choice, as Spain is currently not on the UK’s ‘red list’ which requires a mandatory 10-day hotel stay at the travellers’ expense.
You do however, have to buy a compulsory travel-testing pack, which is a set of two home Covid tests. These can only be bought from a UK government-approved supplier and cost around £210 (€246) per person.
Total cost of Covid testing one-way UK to Spain: €100 to €410 (£85 to £350)
Total cost of Covid testing for one-way Spain to UK: €350 to €490 (£298 to £418)
Total cost of Covid testing for round trip Spain-UK: €450 to €900 (£383 to £767)
