Calgary-shot series Wynonna Earp and Jann, Jann Arden and expat Andrew Phung received multiple Canadian Screen Award nominations Tuesday morning, leading a group of Calgary productions, Calgarians and Calgary expats earning recognition for their work in television, film and web series.
The awards will be handed out from May 17 to May 20 in Toronto.
Wynonna Earp, which is produced by Calgary-based Seven24 Films, will battle for trophies in five categories. That includes nods for best sound in a TV drama for Mike Markiw, Janice Ierulli, Matthew Hussey, Mark Shnuriwsky, Clive Turner, Sid Liberman, Mike Woroniuk and Paul Shubat; best writing in a TV drama for show creator and Calgary expat Emily Andras; best production design or art direction for Trevor Smith, Bill Ives and Amber Humphries; best achievement in makeup for Joanne Jacobsen and best lead actress in a drama series for Melanie Scrofano. The supernatural western is currently searching for a new American network after being cancelled on Syfy in the U.S. after four seasons.

Meanwhile, the Calgary-shot CTV sitcom Jann, also produced by Seven24 Films and starring Jann Arden, received writing nods for two separate episodes: One for Jennica Harper and a shared nomination for Harper and Leah Gauthier. It nominated was work on the series is Brett Van Dyke for best photography in a comedy and Calgary native Elisha Cuthbert for best guest performance in a comedy.
Arden’s CTV special Jann Arden: One Night Only received nominations for best variety or entertainment special, best direction in a variety or sketch comedy special for Gillian Parker and one for Arden for best host for a talk show or entertainment news. Arden also received a nomination for best host of a live entertainment special for the 2019 Scotiabank Giller Prize.
Calgary expat Loose Moose Theatre alumni Andrew Phung received a nod for best host in a web program or series for 2019 Canadian Improv Games with Andrew Phung. He also received his fourth nomination in the best actor in a supporting role for Kim’s Convenience, which producers recently announced would not be renewed for a sixth season.
Phung will be up against fellow Calgary expat Ryan Belleville in the supporting-actor category, who was recognized for his role on Workin’ Moms.
Phung’s Kim’s Convenience co-star Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, who was raised in Calgary, received his fourth best actor Canadian Screen Award nomination for his role of Appa.
British-born actress Agam Darshi, who also grew up in Calgary, received a nomination for best performance by an actress in a supporting role for her work in Deepa Mehta’s Funny Boy, a Sri Lankan-shot drama that earned a total of nine nominations in various film categories.
