Juventus snatched a point in the Turin derby on Saturday afternoon, drawing 2-2 with Torino thanks to a late Cristiano Ronaldo header.
The game started well enough for the visitors, who took the lead through live wire Federico Chiesa on 13 minutes. The Italian winger tiptoed into the penalty area, and with the Torino defence afraid to make any contact, Chiesa fired through Salvatore Sirigu’s legs to hand the advantage to the champions.
Their joy was short-lived however, as Wojciech Szczesny spilled a shot from the edge of the box, and Antonio Sanabria was on hand to rise highest and nod the ball over the line from a couple of yards out,
I Bianconeri had the better chances in the first half, but they just couldn’t get past Sirigu for a second time, as he kept out Cristiano Ronaldo, and Chiesa spurned another opportunity before the break.
All of Pirlo’s words of wisdom went out of the window only seconds into the second half, when Dejan Kulusevski played a wayward back-pass into danger, and Torino swarmed on the ball. Sanabria was played in just outside the box, and his shot somehow found a way through Szczesny at the front post to stun the visitors.
Juventus began to press, with Ronaldo forcing a fine stop from the Torino goalkeeper, and sending another header over the bar. It didn’t look like it was going to be his day, but the Portuguese star’s luck turned late on.
Giorgio Chiellini’s mis-hit volley found its way to the back post, and Ronaldo was lurking in the right place at the right time to nod home.
His joy was cut short when the assistant referee raised his flag, but VAR overturned the decision, giving Juve some hope with ten minutes to play.
Rodrigo Bentancur then hit the post with a strike from range, as I Bianconeri knocked on the door against their crumbling rivals. But Torino finished strongest, with both Sanabria and Daniele Baselli having chances to record a famous and vital victory.
Instead, the game ended 2-2 in Turin, heaping even more pressure on Andrea Pirlo in the Juve technical area. The rookie coach is running out of time.
