Endangered Loggerhead Turtle Rescued
A Loggerhead Turtle was found caught in a fishing net at Al Qana in Abu Dhabi and has been nursed back to health.
The turtle was saved by the Environmental Agency in Abu Dhabi and The National Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the Middle East, and is a breed of turtle not commonly found in the UAE, and is an endangered species of oceanic turtle, listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The turtle was spotted by Nawah Energy Company and was brought to The National Aquarium’s treatment facility by the Environmental Agency.
The turtle was released with 200 other green and sea rescued turtles into the UAE’s Natural Treasures Zone in The Aquarium.
A team of specialists found the turtle with multiple broken bones and swelling and a flipper was lost due to the damage caused by the fishing net.
As the turtle was injured, it will not be able to survive in the wild and will be kept at The Aquarium.
Loggerhead Sea Turtles help in maintaining the health of coral reefs and seagrass beds which are essential for the survival of oceanic life.
